Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Friday, January 21, hinted at being the CM candidate for the party in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.
When asked about the CM face in the state, Priyanka Gandhi said: “Do you see anybody else’s face from the Congress party [in UP]? Dikh to raha hai na sab jagah mera chehra (You can see my face everywhere).”
In October last year, Priyanka Gandhi had announced that Congress will give 40% of its tickets to women in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, sparking speculation that a woman could be nominated as the party’s candidate for the state’s CM.
The Congress has taken up women’s issues in UP as a poll plank this year with its campaigns revolving primarily around women-centric projects. Priyanka Gandhi had earlier released the women’s manifesto where the party promised various incentives and projects for women if the Congress came to power.
The party later launched the ‘Ladki hoon, lad sakti hoon’ campaign as well to woo women voters of UP. The party also launched “button dabao, scooty pao” challenge wherein people will be asked to answer a quiz on Congress’ women manifesto. The person to answer the quiz fastest will win a two-wheeler.
The state will vote in seven phases between February 10 and March 7. The result will be declared on March 10.
