Drones have hit several buildings in the Russian capital Moscow, causing “minor” damage and leading residents to be evacuated. Meanwhile, Kyiv’s mayor Vitali Klitschko has described an air raid on the city as a “massive attack”.

Russia’s defence ministry has claimed Kyiv was behind a “terrorist” drone attack on its capital this morning.  The ministry has said eight drones were involved in the strike and all of them have since been destroyed by air defence systems.

Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, said that several drones were shot down on their approach to Moscow. It was not immediately clear who launched the drones. Several of Russia’s Telegram messaging channels reported that four to 10 drones were shot on the outskirts of Moscow and in its immediate region. Russia’s RIA state news agency reported that some residents of a building on Moscow’s Profsoyuznaya Street in the city’s south were being evacuated.

They also said that several drones fell on buildings, inflicting “minor damage”. Moscow’s mayor has claimed that two people sought medical assistance after the attack. Russia’s investigative committee has said it is now investigating the drone attack.

A statement from the ministry reads: “This morning, the Kyiv regime launched a terrorist attack with unmanned aerial vehicles on objects in the city of Moscow. Eight aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicles were involved in the attack. All enemy drones are hit. Three of them were suppressed by electronic warfare, lost control and deviated from their intended targets.”

More than 10 drones were shot down in the region, Russia’s RBC news agency reports, citing sources. Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin also confirmed the early morning attack on the Russian capital. Mr. Sobyanin said in a Telegram post that drones had “insignificant damage” to several buildings and that “no one has been seriously hurt”, without clarifying what that means.

Residents of two buildings damaged in the attack have been evacuated, Mr Sobyanin added.
