Multiple Explosions Rock Lahore; Airspace Closed Amid High Tensions

Lahore, Pakistan — May 8, 2025 — A wave of loud explosions jolted Lahore early Thursday morning, triggering widespread panic and prompting immediate security responses across the city. The blasts were concentrated along Walton Road, particularly in the Gopal Nagar and Naseerabad areas, with several reportedly near Walton Airport.

Eyewitness videos circulating on social media showed residents fleeing their homes in fear as thick smoke plumed into the sky. Authorities are investigating the cause of the blasts, with preliminary reports suggesting the downing of an “unidentified drone” near Walton Airport. The origin of the drone remains unconfirmed, and no official statement has been released by Indian authorities.

This alarming incident comes just a day after a high-profile military operation by Indian forces targeted alleged terror camps across the border, raising concerns about a potential escalation. In response to the explosions, Pakistani officials swiftly placed key urban areas on alert and temporarily closed multiple commercial air routes.

Flight operations at Lahore and Sialkot were suspended earlier today due to what officials termed “prevailing regional tensions.” Affected flights include a Pakistan International Airlines service from Medina, diverted to Karachi, and another from Multan to Lahore, also rerouted.

As per a new Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), the temporary closure of Lahore and Sialkot airspace is expected to remain in effect until noon Thursday. Security forces continue to investigate the cause and implications of the blasts.
