Amazon said it has expanded its operations network across India with 20 new fulfilment centres, six sort centres and 150 last-mile delivery stations, marking its biggest-ever operations network expansion ahead of the 2026 festive season. The company is investing more than ₹2,800 crore to strengthen capacity, improve delivery speeds and take its logistics infrastructure deeper into smaller cities.
Festive E-Commerce Enters a Critical Phase
India’s festive period is among the most important sales windows for e-commerce companies, with demand typically accelerating around major celebrations and year-end shopping. For platforms, the ability to store products closer to customers, process orders quickly and complete last-mile deliveries efficiently can determine both customer satisfaction and market share.
Amazon’s latest expansion therefore goes beyond adding warehouses. It represents a strategic effort to build a logistics network capable of handling sharply higher order volumes while reaching consumers in Tier II and Tier III markets.
₹2,800-Crore Push Expands National Capacity
Amazon’s new investment will increase its total storage capacity by 50% to 64 million cubic feet. The company has added 20 fulfilment centres, seven of which are in non-metro locations, including its first fulfilment centres in Raipur, Ranchi and Varanasi. These facilities place inventory closer to emerging demand centres, potentially reducing transportation distances and delivery times.
The six new sort centres, located in Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Meerut, Ramanagar, Raipur and Varanasi, will expand Amazon India’s total sortation area by 25%, from 2.4 million to 3 million square feet. Sort centres are crucial because they organise shipments according to destination before parcels move into the final delivery network.
Last-Mile Network Reaches Deeper into India
The company is also adding 150 last-mile delivery stations across 118 cities. Twelve locations—including Bhojpur, Bokajan, Jalaun, Jehanabad, Namsai, Puruliya, Ribhoi, Senapati, Sivasagar, Udalguri, Ukhrul and Wokha—will receive an Amazon last-mile station for the first time.
This expansion is particularly important as e-commerce growth increasingly comes from smaller cities. Bringing inventory and delivery infrastructure closer to consumers can support faster fulfilment, including same-day and next-day services.
Jobs, Sellers and Technology Add Momentum
Amazon’s logistics expansion is accompanied by 160,000 seasonal job opportunities across 400 cities, covering fulfilment, packaging, transportation and delivery operations. The company says these opportunities extend across metros as well as Tier II and Tier III markets.
The company is also scaling its technology-driven delivery ecosystem, including its ultra-fast Amazon Now business, while continuing to serve sellers and consumers across every serviceable pin code.
Logistics Becomes Amazon’s Festive Battleground
Amazon’s expansion highlights how India’s e-commerce competition is increasingly becoming a contest of infrastructure as much as discounts and product selection. More storage, wider sorting capacity and deeper last-mile reach can help Amazon absorb demand spikes while improving delivery reliability.
The real test, however, will come when festive orders surge simultaneously across major cities and emerging markets.
Infrastructure Will Decide the Next Growth Wave
Amazon’s latest investment signals a clear strategic bet: India’s next e-commerce growth opportunity lies increasingly beyond the metros. By moving inventory closer to consumers and strengthening the final mile, the company is preparing not merely for one festive season but for a broader shift in how Indians shop.
If execution matches the scale of investment, stronger logistics could become Amazon’s decisive advantage in winning customers, empowering sellers and capturing the rapidly expanding consumption potential of smaller Indian cities.
