India Supports US Action Against TRF: ‘Clear Message Against Terrorism’

In a significant move to reinforce global counterterrorism efforts, the United States Department of State has officially designated The Resistance Front (TRF) — a proxy of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) — as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT).

The designation comes after TRF claimed responsibility for the April 22, 2025 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 civilians dead — one of the deadliest attacks in India since the 2008 Mumbai massacre.

TRF’s Terror Links and US Action

In a statement issued by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the US reaffirmed its commitment to counterterrorism, stating that TRF functions as a front for Pakistan-based LeT, already designated as an FTO.

“TRF claimed responsibility for the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam attack. This action underscores our commitment to counter terrorism and hold accountable those who target civilians,” Rubio said.

The US Department of State cited TRF’s continued involvement in multiple attacks on Indian security forces, especially in 2024, as justification for the move. The new designation under Section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act and Executive Order 13224 will enable tighter sanctions, asset freezes, and legal penalties on the group and its supporters.

Trump Administration’s Zero-Tolerance Approach

Highlighting the broader US strategy, the Trump administration reaffirmed its commitment to global security and allied cooperation:

“These actions reflect the Trump administration’s commitment to justice for the victims of the Pahalgam attack and reaffirm our dedication to global security,” the statement read.

The designation also strengthens Lashkar-e-Taiba’s FTO status by formally linking TRF and its aliases under the group’s umbrella. These amendments will take effect following publication in the Federal Register.

India Welcomes the US Move

Reacting swiftly, the Indian Embassy in Washington praised the decision:

“Another demonstration of strong India-USA counter-terrorism cooperation. Appreciate the Department of State for listing The Resistance Front (TRF) as a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization and Specially Designated Global Terrorist.”

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, while addressing the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers in Tianjin, said:

“The Pahalgam attack was a brutal attempt to destabilize Kashmir’s tourism economy and create communal tensions. India has taken concrete action and will continue doing so.”

United Nations Condemns the Attack

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) had earlier strongly condemned the Pahalgam attack, calling for swift justice against the perpetrators, sponsors, and financiers.

This coordinated international response — including condemnation from the UN, sanctions from the US, and firm action from India — underscores growing momentum to hold state-sponsored terror groups accountable.
