Bill Gates Witnesses India's Drone Revolution
India’s rural landscape is undergoing a technological transformation, thanks to the Namo Drone Didi Scheme—an initiative designed to empower women by training them to operate agricultural drones. This initiative received global attention when Bill Gates, Chairman of the Gates Foundation and former Microsoft CEO, visited IARI, Pusa Campus in New Delhi to interact with three Drone Didi’s trained by Marut Drones.
During his visit, Gates saw first-hand how women from Bihar are leveraging drone technology to increase agricultural efficiency, boost their incomes, and challenge gender norms. The event highlighted the impact of innovation on rural livelihoods and India’s efforts to integrate women into cutting-edge technology sectors.
How Drones Are Transforming Agriculture
The demonstration featured Marut AG365 drones, operated by the trained Drone Didis, showcasing their potential in farming. These drones:
- Improve efficiency – Automating pesticide and fertilizer spraying reduces labor and increases yield.
- Enhance safety – Drones replace manual pesticide application, reducing exposure to harmful chemicals.
- Optimize resources – Precision spraying minimizes waste, conserving water and chemicals.
- Boost income – Women trained as drone pilots earn a stable livelihood by offering services to farmers.
- Providing financial independence – Women now earn sustainable incomes as certified drone pilots.
- Developing high-tech skills – Learning drone operation equips them with technical expertise.
- Breaking gender stereotypes – Women are entering a field traditionally reserved for men.
- Encouraging entrepreneurship – Some Drone Didis are starting their own drone-based businesses.
