1988 road rage case: How Sidhu’s first night went in jail

The SC sentenced Navjot Singh Sidhu to one-year imprisonment in the 1988 road rage case on Thursday. After a medical check-up, Sidhu was sent to Patiala jail on Friday.

The Supreme Court sentenced Sidhu to one-year in jail in a 1988 road rage case on Thursday. After surrendering, Sidhu was sent for a medical examination, following which he was forwarded to jail.

After going inside the jail, Sidhu was allotted a prisoner number and shifted to barrack number 10, where, according to sources, he would be sharing the cell with eight prisoners serving murder sentences. In the barracks, Sidhu will be sleeping on a bed made of cement, said sources.

According to sources, Sidhu was given dal and roti yesterday at 7.15 pm as per the jail manual. However, he denied it, citing ill health. He only ate salad and some fruit.

Sidhu has asked for a special diet as he is allergic to wheat and has a liver problem, Sidhu’s media advisor Surinder Dalla said, adding that he has not been eating roti for a long time. That’s why he has asked for a special diet. “He also gave information about the same during the medical examination yesterday,” Surinder said.

The former Punjab Congress chief has been provided with four sets of white kurta-pyjamas, a chair-table, a cupboard, two turbans, a blanket, a bed, three sets of underwear and a vest, two towels, a mosquito net, a copy and a pen, a pair of shoes, two bedcovers, two pillow covers.

Sidhu was earlier let off with a fine of Rs 1,000 in March 2018. Now, the maximum possible punishment under Section 323 of the IPC has been awarded to Sidhu.

On May 15, 2018, the apex court set aside the Punjab and Haryana High Court order convicting Sidhu of culpable homicide and sentencing him to a three-year jail term in the case, holding him guilty of voluntarily causing hurt to the victim, Gurnam Singh – a senior citizen.

Later in September 2018, the top court agreed to examine a review petition filed by the victim’s family and issued a notice to Sidhu.

Right before the Punjab elections earlier this year, his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu had said that the case was being pursued at the behest of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikramjit Majithia.
