Citing “deteriorating law and order situation” in the state, 54 Bengal BJP MLAs led by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari met Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and demanded President’s rule in West Bengal.
The Bengal BJP on Monday submitted a memorandum to Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar seeking the imposition of President’s rule in the state, hours after ruckus in the West Bengal Assembly.
Citing “deteriorating law and order situation” in the state, 54 Bengal BJP MLAs led by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari met Governor Dhankhar and demanded President’s rule in West Bengal.
In a letter to the governor, the BJP alleged that MLAs misbehaved with Dhankhar and blocked him from leaving the House; a similar situation is prevailing in the entire state whereby opponents are being silenced, the saffron party claimed. In light of this, they have sought that President’s rule be imposed in West Bengal under Article 356.
While the BJP has demanded President’s rule in Bengal on previous occasions too, this is the first time they have made concerted efforts to tender a formal petition signed by 54 party MLAs.
After the pandemonium in the state Assembly, Governor Dhankhar said in a tweet he was anguished after women MLAs from the ruling Trinamool Congress allegedly tried to block his way and that the marshal of the assembly failed to uphold the modesty of the chair.
High drama was witnessed on the first day of the budget session of the West Bengal Assembly earlier in the day. BJP MLAs staged a protest in the House over alleged violence in the recently concluded civic body polls in the state.
Dhankhar, who arrived at the Assembly at 2 pm to deliver the inaugural address, could not do it as BJP legislators streamed into the well bearing placards and raised slogans. The governor was seen pleading with the BJP MLAs to calm down and let the proceedings begin, but in vain.
TMC members also raised anti-BJP slogans. Irked over the protest, Dhankhar thrice tried to leave the House but his way was blocked by TMC legislators.
Eventually, Dhankhar dispensed his duty After this, BJP MLAs came out of the House, went to the Raj Bhavan and handed over a memorandum to the governor demanding imposition of President’s rule in the state.
The governor has not issued a statement on whether he will take any action in this regard.
