The BJP and the Congress hit out at the CPI(M)-led government in Kerala over intervention in proposal to confer honorary D Litt on President Ram Nath Kovind.
Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala alleged that the CPI(M)-led government had intervened to have University of Kerala reject Governor Arif Mohammed Khan’s suggestion to confer honorary D.Litt on President Ram Nath Kovind.
Responding to the Congress leader’s allegation, Kerala CPM secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan denied the claim and said the issue did not come up before the government or the party. He further said that if there was any contention on the issue, it should have been revealed by the government and not a third party.
Ramesh Chennithala had cited the above incident as an example of government’s interference in various universities.
“The Governor has recommended to give honorary D Litt to the president of the country. But, it is learnt that the vice-chancellor forwarded it to the government,” Chennithala had said.
He added that it is up to the university if they want to confer the honorary D.Litt or not. (MANISH)
