Uttar Pradesh polls: Voting for fifth phase ends, 54.98% voter turnout recorded

The fifth phase of polling for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections ended on Sunday. Voting started at 7 am and continued till 6 pm in the state.

Polling for the fifth phase of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections concluded on Sunday, with the state recording 54.98% voter turnout till 6 pm. A total of 692 candidates were in the fray for 61 assembly seats across 12 districts of Uttar Pradesh in the fifth phase of UP polls. Voting started at 7 am and continued till 6 pm in the state.

The districts that were up for polls on Sunday included Amethi, Raebareli, Ayodhya, Sultanpur, Chitrakoot, Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Barabanki, Bahraich, Shravasti and Gonda.

According to the Election Commission of India’s voter turnout app, the polling percentage was 54.98 till 6pm. The final polling figure will be available on Monday, an official said.

With the completion of the fifth phase of polling, Uttar Pradesh has now voted for 292 of the total 403 seats. The sixth and seventh phases of UP Assembly elections will be held on March 3 and March 7 respectively. Results will be declared on March 10

According to the Election Commission of India’s voter turnout app, Amethi recorded 55.86 per cent voting, Ayodhya 58.01 per cent, Bahraich 54.60 per cent, Barabanki 54.65 per cent, Chitrakoot 59.64 per cent, and Gonda 54.98 per cent.

Meanwhile, Kaushambi logged 57.01 per cent polling, Pratapgarh 52.65 per cent, Prayagraj 53.19 per cent, Raebareli 56.60 per cent, Shrawasti 57.24 per cent and Sultanpur 55.38 per cent.

In Prayagraj’s Allapur, 78-year-old Bhuri Pathak, suffering from a hip fracture, went to the polling station in an ambulance to exercise her franchise. Her son claimed that she never missed voting in an election.

“I have to come like this because I have a fracture in my back, but can’t let my vote go to waste,” she was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
