Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Kargil Vijay Diwas is a symbol of pride and glory of Maa Bharati. On this occasion, my salute to all the brave sons of the country who have proved their valor in the defense of the motherland. Jai Hind!”
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted, “On Kargil Vijay Diwas, India salutes the bravery, courage and sacrifice of our armed forces. They fought valiantly in extremely harsh conditions to defend our motherland. Their act of valour & indomitable spirit will remain etched forever as a defining moment in India’s history.”
Home Minister Amit Shah said, “Kargil Vijay Diwas is a symbol of the indomitable courage and valour of the Indian Armed Forces. Today is a day to be proud as well as to honour and remember the valour of our soldiers. With their bravery, I salute the soldiers who raised the tricolour again after driving out the enemies from Kargil.”
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to every fighter who laid down his life for the country. “Showing their indomitable courage, our brave soldiers raised the flag of India’s victory in the Kargil war. The army never allowed the tricolor to come under fire with its gallantry and valour,” he tweeted.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in Hindi, “On Kargil Vijay Diwas, I salute the bravery, courage and sacrifice of all the brave soldiers of the country. We are proud of our brave army and our brave soldiers. Wishing everyone a very Happy Kargil Vijay Diwas. Jai Hind.”
On Tuesday, Army personnel will commemorate the sacrifices and valour of the soldiers at the Kargil War Memorial in Ladakh’s Drass. Serving and retired army personnel, Kargil War veterans and next of kin of fallen heroes are expected to take part in the event.
Rajnath Singh visited Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday to participate in the commemoration ceremony in Jammu on Kargil Vijay Diwas.
The Kargil War was fought between May 8, 1999 to July 26, 1999, against Pakistani infiltrators, who had transgressed into Indian territory across the Line of Control and occupied fortified defences overlooking the NH 1A in Kargil’s Drass and Batalik Sectors of Ladakh region.
During the course of the 55-day war, Indian Army soldiers braved unprecedented hardships, overcame the hazards of inhospitable terrain and extreme climate conditions to relentlessly launch attacks on the enemy’s well-fortified bunkers.
The soldiers came under deadly artillery and small arms fire and suffered heavy casualties. But with bravery, heroic deeds and unflinching determination, they forced the enemy forces to withdraw and vacate defence emplacements, securing a hard-fought victory.
Each year, Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated on July 26.
