Kolkata and its neighborhood turned into a battleground as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took to the streets over alleged corrupt practices of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday.

Amid the violent protest, a war of words broke out between the two parties on Twitter. While the BJP targeted the Mamata government for using disproportionate force on BJP protesters, the TMC called the incident ‘Gundagardi’ and vandalism being done by the BJP in the name of peaceful protest. On Tuesday, a police vehicle was set ablaze allegedly by BJP protesters near Barabazar police station on the streets of Kolkata.

TIME FOR INDIA TO REJECT BJP: TMC

TMC claimed that eye-witnesses saw people carrying lathis and BJP flags pelting stones and setting fire to police cars during the protest.

Sharing a video of the same, TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee wrote on Twitter, “Today, not just Bengal but the nation saw a glimpse of what @BJP4Bengal hooligans are capable of doing to our City of Joy. We shudder to imagine what they would’ve done had they come to power.WB, thank you for rejecting them!*Now, it’s TIME FOR INDIA TO REJECT THEM!” (sic)

In the video shared by Abhishek Banerjee, some people could be seen holding BJP flags and allegedly setting a police PCR van on fire. After the incident, additional police forces were summoned and fire tenders were called in to put off the fire.

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh also took to Twitter and shared a video in which some people can be seen beating a police officer badly and attacking him with sticks.

“What is this? Is this peaceful political event? Police Officer is being attacked by BJP goons. Each and everybody should be arrested,” the TMC leader said on Twitter and alleged that BJP supporters beat the cops.
