Over 12,000 files and furniture worth Rs 25 lakh of the Madhya Pradesh government were destroyed in a fire that engulfed Bhopal’s, Satpura Bhawan. While Congress saw a conspiracy in the fire, which broke out months ahead of the Assembly election, the BJP government said no sensitive file was destroyed.
The massive fire that broke out in the six-story Satpura Bhawan in Bhopal gutted furniture worth Rs 25 lakh and more than 12,000 important files. While the Congress alleged a conspiracy behind the blaze, the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh asserted that no sensitive files were destroyed in the fire.
Satpura Bhawan houses several departments of the Madhya Pradesh government. The fire, which started on the third floor and spread to the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors of the building, comes just ahead of the state Assembly polls slated to be held later this year.
This is the third time in over a decade that a fire broke out in Satpura Bhawan. And coincidentally, the blaze started on the third floor of the government building, as did the fires in 2012 and 2018, just before the Assembly elections in those years.
A major fire broke out at Satpura Bhawan, which houses various offices of the Madhya Pradesh government, in Bhopal. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has sought the help of the Indian Air Force as firefighting operations continued into the night.
Fire tenders from the Army, AAI, and facilities of oil companies have also been called in for the dousing operation, news agencies reported. No casualties have been reported in the blaze.
Officials told the news agency that the blaze destroyed furniture and documents of several departments. Around 22 fire tenders and 30-40 tankers have been deployed for the dousing operation.
According to initial information, the fire began at 4 pm at the regional office of the Tribal Welfare Department on the third floor of the building. Several fire tenders and experts from the Army rushed to the spot. The blaze was brought under control after nearly 12 hours.
