The infamous “goli maaro” slogans were raised outside Nangloi police station on Sunday, a day after violence broke out during the Muharram procession in the national capital.
A day after a crowd taking part in the Muharram procession clashed with police in west Delhi’s Nangloi, tensions continued to simmer in the area. Members of a Right-wing group staged a protest outside the Nangloi police station, shouting slogans and demanding the arrest of the alleged rioters.
Police personnel were present at the spot to maintain the law and order situation.
CLASHES IN DELHI DURING MUHARRAM PROCESSION
Violence broke out during a Muharram procession in Delhi’s Nangloi area on Saturday evening, resulting in injuries to several police personnel. Following the clashes, the police resorted to lathi-charge to control the “unruly crowd,” Delhi Police officials told the media.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Harendra Singh, the clash started when a few ‘tazia’ procession organisers tried to divert their procession from the route that was decided earlier.
Following the objection to the diversion, stones were pelted at the police personnel. To control the situation and disperse the crowd, the police had to resort to a “mild lathi-charge” to control the mob, DCP Singh added.
Twelve people, including six police personnel, were injured due to the stone pelting.
The police registered three cases on Sunday in connection with the incident.
Harendra Singh said the police are checking CCTV footage from the area and analysing videos of the incidents that were widely circulated on social media on Saturday. Several teams have been constituted to identify the perpetrators and initiate legal action against them.
