Top 500 businessmen including Gautam Adani, and Mukesh Ambani Invited to World Leaders’ G20 Dinner

The 18th G20 Leaders’ Summit, to be held at the Bharat Mandapam in the national capital, is one of the most high-profile international summits ever hosted by India.

India’s richest businessmen, led by Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, will join G20 leaders at a dinner in the national capital on Saturday, as the country showcases its position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought to wield leadership of the G20 grouping of the world’s most powerful economies to promote India as a destination for trade and investment, particularly as China’s economy slows.

Among the 500 businessmen invited are Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, billionaire Kumar Mangalam Birla, Bharti Airtel founder-chairman Sunil Mittal, in addition to Reliance Industries’ Ambani and the Adani Group chairman, two sources said.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the weekend summit, however.

Saturday’s dinner will afford PM Modi another opportunity to highlight business and investment opportunities in India. To be held at a brand-new Bharat Mandapam, the menu will feature Indian food with a special emphasis on millet, a grain the country has been promoting.

World leaders, including UK PM Rishi Sunak, US President Joe Biden, Chinese Premier Li Qiang, and Australian PM Anthony Albanese, will arrive in New Delhi today ahead of the G20 summit. Meanwhile, Spain’s caretaker prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, will miss the G20 summit in New Delhi after testing positive for Covid-19. Economy Minister Nadia Calvino and Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares will represent Spain at the summit, the government said in a statement.

Other leaders arriving in Delhi today are Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, UAE President HH Shaikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Former prime ministers Manmohan Singh and HD Deve Gowda have been invited to the G20 Summit dinner in New Delhi on Saturday.  All chief ministers, including those from Opposition-governed states, have been invited to the dinner.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, along with other chief ministers of the INDIA bloc, including Tamil Nadu’s MK Stalin, West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee, Jharkhand’s Hemant Soren, Punjab’s Bhagwant Mann, and Delhi’s Arvind Kejriwal, will also attend the G20 banquet hosted by President Droupadi Murmu.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has not been invited to the G20 dinner; his office has confirmed.
