Asian Games 2023: On Day 6, Eight medals boost India to no.4 in the standings

  • India claimed overall eight medals, including two Golds, on Day 6 to rise in the medal standings of the Asian Games 2023.  
  • Palak Gulia won the Gold and Esha Singh claimed Silver in the women’s 10m pistol events while Kiran Baliyan bagged Bronze in the Shot Put to open India’s account in athletics. 
  • On Day 7, Rohan Bopanna and Rutuja Bhosale won gold in the mixed doubles tennis final. 

Indian contingent enjoyed a big success on day 6 of the Asian Games 2023 tournament on Friday, September 29. Palak Gulia won Gold in the women’s 10m pistol individual event as India claimed a total of eight medals to take their overall tally to 33.

India opened the day 6 campaign with a silver medal in the women’s 10m pistol team event and then the men’s team bagged a Gold in the 50m rifle 3P team event. India missed out on a gold in tennis as Saketh Myneni and Ramanathan Ramkumar lost in the men’s doubles final event but India can hope for another medal as Rohan Bopanna and Rutuja Bhosale entered the finals of the mixed doubles today.

Palak and Esha Singh gave India their biggest joy on Friday as the duo finished as top two in the women’s 10m pistol event. Palak bagged the historic gold while Esha settled for a silver.

In squash, the women’s team clinched the Bronze but the men’s team stormed into the final and will take on Pakistan in a clash for Gold on Saturday. Star boxer Nikhat Zareen also confirmed a medal as she entered the semi-final round and bagged a Paris Olympics 2024 quota for India.

Kiran Baliyan finished day 6 for India with their first-ever medal in athletics in Asiad 2022. She claimed Bronze in the women’s shot-put event to take India’s overall medal tally to 33.

On Day 7, Rohan Bopanna and Rutuja Bhosale won gold in the mixed doubles tennis final, on Day 7 of the ongoing Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou. The Indian pair defeated Chinese Taipei’s En-shuo, Tsung-hao Huang in the final. Meanwhile, the Indian shooting contingent also took a silver medal. Sarabjot Singh and Divya TS crashed to a narrow defeat against China in the 10m air pistol mixed team final. It turned out to be a thriller as the Indians lost 14-16. In athletics, Murali Sreeshankar has qualified for the men’s long jump final and Jyothi Yarraji Nithya Ramraj has made it to the women’s 100m hurdles final. Meanwhile, in women’s golf, Aditi Ashok is closing on a medal and ended the day in pole position in individual round 3. Also in women’s team golf round 3, India finished the day on top. Meanwhile, Preeti and Lovlina Borgohain assured India of medals by entering the semi-finals of their respective boxing categories.

India also faces Pakistan in two big contests. The two men’s squash teams will vie for gold in the final while later in the day, the two men’s hockey teams take each other on in a match that could decide who seals a spot in the semi-final. The Indian men’s badminton team faces South Korea in the semi-finals.
