Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi, chairman emeritus of the Oberoi Group, passed away at 94 on Tuesday (November 14) morning, an official of the Oberoi Group said. PRS Oberoi was widely known as the doyen of Indian hospitality, who has now left behind a huge legacy.
“It is with deep sadness that we inform the peaceful passing of PRS Oberoi, Chairman Emeritus of The Oberoi Group, earlier today,” a statement said. “As we mourn the loss of a true icon, we also aim to celebrate the extraordinary legacy PRS Oberoi leaves behind. In the coming days, we will share details of our plans to honour and remember him,” the statement added.
A luminary in the hospitality industry, Oberoi’s legacy transcends borders, leaving an indelible mark on the global landscape, it added.
Oberoi is known for transforming the hospitality industry in India. He received his education in India, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. He earned a degree in Hotel Management from Lausanne, Switzerland
He is survived by his son Vikram, CEO and managing director of EIH, and two daughters. Oberoi was recognised by the International Hospitality Institute in the Global 100 in Hospitality as one of the Most Powerful People in the Global Hospitality industry.
PRS Oberoi received numerous awards and accolades. In 2008, Oberoi was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour, for his contributions to the hospitality industry. He was also honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at ILTM (International Luxury Travel Market), recognizing his exceptional leadership and vision. PRS Oberoi was presented with the ‘Corporate Hotelier of the World’ award by HOTELS magazine USA.
The 6th International Hotels Investment Forum in Berlin honoured him with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also the recipient of Forbes India Leadership Awards, Economic Times Awards for Corporate Excellence, CNBC TV 18 India Business Leader Awards, Business India magazine’s Businessman of the Year, and Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.
