Speaking at the ninth edition of the Raisina Dialogue 2024, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized India’s approach to the Kashmir issue, categorizing it as an ‘aggression’ matter taken to the United Nations, contrasting with others framing it as an ‘accession’ issue.

Jaishankar addressed the complex dynamics of global relationships, asserting that while interests often prevail over values, this reality isn’t new. He cited India’s initial reliance on multilateralism by bringing the Kashmir ‘aggression’ issue to the UN, attributing the alternative narrative of ‘accession’ to the geopolitical motivations of other nations. He underscored the maturation of India’s diplomatic stance over time.

Advocating for multilateralism, Jaishankar highlighted its coexistence with national interests, stressing that opposition to multilateralism is unwarranted. He also portrayed India as a bridging power, exemplified during its G20 Presidency, promoting the concept of Vishwamitra, or universal friendship.
