Ajit Doval Reappointed as National Security Adviser for Third Consecutive Term; Dr. PK Mishra will continue as the Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary

The central government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has once again entrusted former IPS officer Ajit Doval with the critical role of National Security Adviser (NSA). This marks his third consecutive term in this pivotal position, emphasizing the government’s confidence in his capabilities.

According to an official government order issued by the Personnel Ministry, Ajit Doval’s reappointment will be co-terminus with the term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi or until further orders. This underscores the crucial role Doval plays in shaping and implementing the nation’s security strategies.

Alongside Doval’s reappointment, Dr. PK Mishra, IAS (Retired), will continue to serve as the Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Mishra’s appointment, effective from 10.06.2024. Like Doval, Mishra’s tenure will be co-terminus with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders, with the added distinction of being assigned the rank of Cabinet Minister during his term of office.

Furthermore, Amit Khare and Tarun Kapoor have been appointed as Advisors to the Prime Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, with the rank and scale of Secretary to Government of India, for a period of two years. Their appointments come into effect from 10.06.2024 or until further orders.

Ajit Doval’s tenure as NSA began with Prime Minister Modi’s first term in 2014 and has continued through subsequent reappointments, reflecting his invaluable contributions to national security. Born on January 20, 1945, in Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal, Doval joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1968 and has since amassed a wealth of experience and expertise in security matters.

During his illustrious career, Doval has been honored with the Kirti Chakra in 1988 for his distinguished services and remains the youngest officer to receive the Indian Police Medal. His reappointment as NSA reaffirms his pivotal role in leading the National Security Council (NSC) and advising the Prime Minister on matters of national and international security.
