Terminal T1 of IGI Airport Temporarily Closed Due to Roof Collapse Amid Heavy Rainfall in Delhi

In a tragic incident at Terminal T1 of Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi, heavy rainfall caused the collapse of the terminal’s canopy, resulting in one fatality and injuring four others. In response, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Rammohan Naidu has directed airlines to maintain fare stability to avoid further inconveniencing passengers during this period.

The Minister has issued an advisory to all airlines, urging them to avoid a steep increase in airfares amid the temporary closure of Terminal T1. In light of the incident, Minister Naidu convened a high-level review meeting with key officials to address the ongoing situation and ensure passenger safety and convenience.

Key Measures Announced:

  • Passenger Safety and Convenience: Emphasis on passenger safety and the importance of maintaining fare stability.
  • War Room Establishment: A 24/7 War Room will be set up under the Ministry of Civil Aviation to monitor the situation closely. The War Room will ensure the full refund of canceled flights or provide alternative travel route tickets within seven days.

Investigation and Structural Assessment:

  • Structural Engineers from IIT Delhi: Engineers have been tasked to immediately assess the damage at Terminal T1. The Ministry will decide on further action based on their initial findings.
  • Inspection Directive: The Airports Authority of India has been instructed to issue a circular mandating thorough inspections of structural strength at all minor and major airports. These inspections are to be completed within 2 to 5 days, and the reports are to be submitted to the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

The Ministry, alongside all related agencies, is working diligently to resolve the current challenges and enhance overall safety standards at airports. The government’s immediate response and the establishment of the War Room aim to minimize disruption and ensure that the safety and convenience of passengers remain the top priority.
