Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Moscow from July 8 to 9 at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit. This marks PM Modi’s first bilateral visit since securing a decisive victory in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

In anticipation of the visit, PM Modi highlighted the “special” and “privileged” nature of the relationship between India and Russia, noting the significant advancements over the past decade. He expressed his eagerness to review all aspects of bilateral cooperation with President Putin, referring to him as a “friend.”

“The Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia has advanced over the past ten years, including in the areas of energy, security, trade, investment, health, education, culture, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges,” PM Modi stated. “I look forward to reviewing all aspects of bilateral cooperation with my friend President Vladimir Putin and sharing perspectives on various regional and global issues. We seek to play a supportive role in a peaceful and stable region. The visit will also provide me with an opportunity to meet the vibrant Indian community in Russia.”

Although the Ministry of External Affairs described the visit as a two-day trip, PM Modi will technically be in Moscow for only 26 hours. The visit underscores the strong ties between the two nations and aims to further bolster their partnership.

While PM Modi’s statement did not specifically address the issue of Indians compelled to work in the Russian Army, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra assured during a special press briefing that this matter would be among the Prime Minister’s top priorities during his discussions in Moscow.

The summit is expected to cover a broad range of topics, including regional and global issues, and will serve as a platform for both leaders to reinforce their commitment to a stable and prosperous partnership.
