Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has filed a special leave petition with the Supreme Court, challenging his arrest by the CBI in the corruption case related to the alleged liquor policy scam. This legal move contests the Delhi High Court’s August 5 decision, which had dismissed Kejriwal’s plea against his arrest and subsequent remand.
The matter was mentioned before Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud by senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi for urgent listing. CJI Chandrachud instructed Singhvi to send an email to the registry for further examination of the petition.
In its decision, the Delhi High Court, led by Justice Neena Bansal Krishna, upheld the legality of Kejriwal’s arrest, stating it was justified and not illegal.
The Delhi High Court has yet to deliver a verdict on Kejriwal’s bail plea related to the CBI case, which was reserved on July 29. Earlier, the CBI had filed its charge sheet against Kejriwal and other accused, and the Enforcement Directorate had also filed its prosecution complaint in the money laundering case involving Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
On July 12, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Kejriwal in connection with the ED’s money laundering case. However, his release was delayed due to his arrest by the CBI.
Currently, Kejriwal remains in judicial custody, which has been extended until August 20 in the excise policy case.
