Former U.S. President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama delivered compelling speeches at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, expressing strong support for Kamala Harris as she positions herself to become the first Black and South Asian woman to secure a major party’s presidential nomination.

Barack Obama, returning to the city that played a significant role in his political journey, began his speech by reigniting the spirit of his 2008 campaign, saying, “Chicago, it’s good to be home.” He then reflected on his successful tenure, particularly his decision to choose Joe Biden as his vice president, praising Biden’s empathy and leadership qualities.

However, Obama’s speech soon shifted to a critique of Donald Trump, who is Kamala Harris’s primary opponent in the upcoming election. Obama described Trump as a “78-year-old billionaire” who has continuously complained about his problems since his 2016 presidential campaign. He criticized Trump’s divisive politics and expressed concern that another four years of Trump’s leadership would bring more chaos.

Michelle Obama also addressed the convention, delivering a powerful critique of Trump. She accused him of using fear and divisive rhetoric to further his political agenda, particularly targeting people of color. She emphasized that Trump’s approach was based on lies and a narrow worldview.

Both Obamas expressed strong support for Kamala Harris, with Barack Obama adapting his famous 2008 campaign slogan to declare, “Yes, she can.” He highlighted Harris’s readiness to lead and her commitment to addressing the concerns of ordinary Americans. Michelle Obama echoed these sentiments, drawing parallels between her and Harris’s upbringings and values, and emphasizing Harris’s dedication to justice and fighting for better wages for the people.

The speeches from the Obamas were a rallying call for the nation to embrace change and support Kamala Harris in her bid for the presidency.
