The meeting, widely covered by state-run media such as Radio Pakistan, signals a warm reception for Naik in Pakistan.
In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Naik shared his interactions with the Pakistani leader, posting a picture of their meeting. According to Naik, Sharif emphasized Islam as a religion of peace and acknowledged Naik’s efforts in promoting this message. Naik also met with other Pakistani leaders, including the speaker of the National Assembly, further cementing his ties with the country’s political leadership.
Naik’s Return to Pakistan After Three Decades
Naik’s visit to Pakistan is particularly noteworthy as it marks his first trip to the country in over 30 years. His last visit, in 1992, saw him meet with religious scholar Dr. Israr Ahmed in Lahore before returning to India. This current month-long visit will take him across major cities such as Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore, where he is scheduled to deliver a series of lectures.
Naik arrived in Pakistan to a red-carpet welcome and full-proof security provided by the government. The Ministry of Religious Affairs, along with PM’s aide Rana Mashhood, greeted him upon his arrival at Islamabad International Airport, further emphasizing the level of support and protection afforded to the preacher during his stay.
India’s Concerns and Extradition Requests
Zakir Naik remains a highly controversial figure in India. He has been accused of promoting extremism and is wanted for money laundering charges. Since leaving India in 2016, he has been a subject of several extradition requests by the Indian government. However, Malaysia, where Naik has enjoyed permanent residency, has resisted these requests. During a recent visit to New Delhi, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim hinted that Malaysia might reconsider Naik’s extradition if India provides substantial evidence against him.
