India’s renewable energy sector surged in 2023, generating over 1.02 million jobs, a milestone that reflects the nation’s growing prominence in the global clean energy landscape. The renewable energy industry, a key driver of both economic growth and sustainable livelihoods, has significantly contributed to job creation in various sectors, with hydropower and solar leading the charge.
Hydropower and Solar: The Largest Contributors to Employment
Hydropower emerged as the top employer within India’s renewable energy space, providing approximately 453,000 jobs—20% of the global hydropower workforce, second only to China. The solar photovoltaic (PV) sector also saw tremendous growth, employing over 318,600 individuals across on-grid and off-grid systems. India added an impressive 9.7 GW of solar PV capacity in 2023, securing its position as the fifth-largest globally in terms of new installations, with a cumulative capacity of 72.7 GW.
India’s Contribution to the Global Green Workforce
India’s role in the global renewable energy workforce has been significant, with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reporting a rise from 13.7 million in 2022 to 16.2 million in 2023. India, contributing to this surge, stands as a leader in clean energy job creation. The government, through its Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, emphasized that the growth of the renewable energy sector is not only fueling the economy but also providing sustainable livelihoods to millions across the country.
Expanding Manufacturing and Wind Power Growth
In addition to job creation, India’s renewable energy manufacturing capacity expanded notably in 2023. The country’s operational solar module manufacturing capacity reached 46 GW, with expectations to grow to 58 GW by 2024, positioning India as the second-largest PV manufacturer globally, following China. Wind energy also showed significant progress, with 44.7 GW of cumulative installed capacity, ranking India fourth globally. The sector created 52,200 jobs, with a considerable portion in operations, maintenance, and installation.
Bioenergy and Other Sectors: Diverse Job Opportunities
Beyond solar and wind, India’s renewable energy sector includes jobs in biofuels, biomass, and biogas. The liquid biofuels industry provided 35,000 jobs, while solid biomass and biogas created 58,000 and 85,000 jobs, respectively. The solar heating and cooling sector contributed another 17,000 jobs, illustrating the diverse employment landscape within the country’s expanding green energy sector.
India’s renewable energy growth not only demonstrates its leadership in clean energy but also highlights the potential for continued job creation and sustainable development.
