Devastating Impact of Tropical Storm Trami
Tropical Storm Trami, locally known as severe tropical storm Kristine, has claimed at least 26 lives and displaced over 150,000 people in the Philippines, officials reported on Thursday. The storm made landfall on the northeastern coast, bringing torrential rain and widespread destruction.
Heavy Rains, Flooding, and Landslides
The storm’s maximum sustained winds of 95 kph (59 mph) caused severe flooding and triggered deadly landslides, particularly in the main island of Luzon. The mountainous northern region of Cordillera was hit hardest, and the state weather agency issued warnings of intense rainfall, potential flooding, and storm surges in northern provinces.
Fatalities and Evacuations
Most of the fatalities occurred due to drowning and landslides, especially in the Bicol region, where 14 deaths were reported in Naga city alone. Trami made landfall in Divilacan, Isabela province, where no casualties were initially reported. However, more than 163,000 residents were forced to seek refuge in evacuation centers, with many homes submerged by floodwaters.
Disruptions and Closures
In preparation for the storm, the government ordered businesses and schools to close, and several flights were cancelled nationwide. The central bank also suspended foreign exchange trading and monetary operations for two consecutive days. The Philippines, prone to tropical storms, often faces devastating effects like these, with an average of 20 storms annually.
