In a tragic yet heroic act, Phantom, a highly trained Belgian Malinois with the Indian Army, lost his life during an anti-terror mission in the Sunderbani area of Jammu and Kashmir. Serving with distinction since August 2022, Phantom was an essential member of the K9 unit deployed for counter-terrorism operations. During the early hours of the mission in Akhnoor, Phantom sustained critical injuries while drawing enemy fire, allowing the soldiers he was supporting to neutralize one terrorist and secure a weapon.

The Indian Army’s White Knight Corps took to social media to honor Phantom’s ultimate sacrifice. “We salute the ultimate sacrifice of our true hero,” they wrote, paying tribute to his courage, loyalty, and dedication. A spokesperson described how, “As our troops were closing in on the trapped terrorists, Phantom bravely engaged, sustaining fatal injuries.” Phantom’s selfless actions on the battlefield stand as a testament to the vital role of military canines in high-risk operations.
Coordinated Efforts to Counter Militancy
Phantom’s sacrifice came during a larger operation where three militants attacked an Army ambulance in the Battal area, triggering a rapid response from the Indian Army, J&K Police, and other security forces. The area was quickly cordoned off, and joint search operations were launched to locate the attackers. In a separate encounter the following morning, another terrorist was neutralized as security forces intensified their offensive against hidden insurgents in the region.
Intense Search and Final Offensive
Following the initial firefight on Monday morning, security forces launched a final assault in the Khour area on Tuesday. Backed by heavy gunfire, loud explosions echoed across the region as the forces, equipped with four BMP II Infantry Combat Vehicles, helicopters, and drones, escalated their search efforts. Phantom’s Legacy
Born on May 25, 2020, Phantom was a valued member of the K9 unit, trained in specialized counter-insurgency tactics by the Remount Veterinary Corps in Meerut. His dedication and valor have left an indelible mark, adding him to a revered list of service animals who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Just last year, another army dog, Kent, a six-year-old Labrador, lost her life protecting her handler during an encounter in Rajouri. Draped in the tricolor, Kent’s heroic farewell mirrored the Army’s deep respect for its canine warriors.
