Pinaka’s Rise Amid India’s Defence Push
India’s ongoing efforts to enhance its domestic defense capabilities under the “Make in India” initiative have led to the development of the advanced Pinaka multi-barrel rocket system, which recently passed a critical flight test. Originally deployed by the Indian Army in the 1999 Kargil War, Pinaka has gained a reputation for its precision and power, attracting global interest. With France and Armenia showing keen interest in acquiring the system, the Pinaka rocket system is poised to become a significant export, strengthening India’s position in the international defense market.
Pinaka: India’s Advanced Guided Weapon System
Named after the mythological bow of Lord Shiva, the Pinaka system was designed to replace the Russian BM-21 Grad rocket launchers for the Indian Army. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the system includes a launcher vehicle, command post, and resupply vehicles, allowing for a high degree of operational flexibility. Capable of firing 12 rockets within 44 seconds, the system can cover an area of 700 by 500 meters with destructive precision.
The guided version of Pinaka, which was the focus of recent tests, has introduced enhanced accuracy and extended range. With seeker technology, Pinaka now offers near-double the range of the initial version, reaching up to 60 km, with plans to achieve ranges beyond 120, 150, and even 200 km. This guided capability positions Pinaka alongside advanced systems like the U.S. HIMARS, making it a valuable asset for long-range, high-precision engagements.
Operational Success and Advanced Features
Pinaka has proven its effectiveness on the battlefield and is currently deployed at sensitive borders, including the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan and the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. This multi-barrel system offers unique shoot-and-scoot functionality, enabling it to evade enemy counter-attacks by moving quickly after firing. Moreover, its operational versatility allows it to fire rockets in manual, remote, standalone, or fully autonomous modes, adapting to diverse combat scenarios.
The latest Pinaka Mk-II version, which was tested across different firing ranges, further improves range and functionality, adding a guided navigation component that has expanded its target precision. A complete battery of Pinaka consists of six launchers capable of firing 72 rockets, ensuring sustained firepower over a large area. With its multi-target salvo mode, the system can engage various targets within seconds, providing critical support in high-stakes operations.
International Demand: Armenia and France Show Interest
Pinaka’s success has not gone unnoticed internationally, with Armenia and France actively pursuing the acquisition of the system. Armenia became the first international client, procuring Pinaka systems in 2023 amid ongoing tensions with Azerbaijan. The system’s reliability and firepower make it an ideal choice for nations facing regional conflicts or seeking a robust defensive capability.
France’s interest in Pinaka marks a significant step in Indo-French defense collaboration. France, India’s second-largest defense supplier, has recently strengthened its defense ties with New Delhi, evident in major deals like the Rafale fighter jet and Airbus C-295 transport aircraft agreements. Talks regarding the Pinaka acquisition are already in advanced stages, and France has plans to test the system in upcoming weeks. This move highlights France’s commitment to bolstering its artillery capabilities and reinforces the strategic partnership between Paris and New Delhi.
Pinaka as a Symbol of India’s Defense Advancements
The Pinaka rocket system stands as a testament to India’s growing capability in defense technology, aligning with its vision of self-reliance under the Make in India initiative. As interest from France and Armenia shows, Pinaka’s success is not only a milestone for India’s defense industry but also a step towards establishing India as a global player in advanced military technology. The international demand for Pinaka highlights its reliability, versatility, and effectiveness on the battlefield, and this interest is likely to encourage further investments in similar systems.
With its proven operational success and rising global demand, Pinaka is positioned to play a crucial role in shaping India’s future defense exports. It not only strengthens India’s military but also reinforces its defense relationships with countries around the world, showcasing India’s growing role as an exporter of advanced military technology.
