Honoring a Legacy of Unity and Progress

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), celebrated annually since 2003, marks the profound connection between India and its vibrant diaspora. The event commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi, India’s greatest Pravasi, from South Africa in 1915—a moment that catalyzed India’s freedom movement. Over the years, PBD has evolved into a vital platform for strengthening ties between Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and their motherland, fostering collaboration for India’s development.

The 18th edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention, held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, from January 7–10, 2025, has brought together over 5,000 delegates from 50 countries under the theme, “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat.” This landmark event underscores the pivotal role of the Indian diaspora in shaping India’s future.

A Historic First for Odisha

For the first time, Odisha is hosting the PBD Convention, showcasing its rich cultural, historical, and spiritual heritage. Extensive preparations have been made to highlight the state’s unique identity. Deputy Chief Minister K.V. Singh Deo expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for entrusting Odisha with this responsibility, emphasizing the significance of India’s ‘Look East’ policy, which seeks to boost the development of Eastern states.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi took this opportunity to position the state as a hub for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), citing its strategic location, investor-friendly policies, and natural resources. Majhi also championed Odisha’s potential as a global tourism and business destination during the convention’s Joint Business Session.

Global Participation and Voices of the Diaspora

The convention has witnessed enthusiastic participation from NRIs and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) representing diverse countries and organizations. Delegates shared their emotional connection to India and praised the government’s initiatives to engage the diaspora meaningfully:

Amit Kumar from Singapore admired the government’s grassroots-level vision, calling it a unique and inspiring approach.

Revathi Pillay from South Africa expressed pride in India’s advancements in technology and leadership, noting Prime Minister Modi’s influence as a global inspiration.

Mohammed Farooqui from the USA appreciated the platform’s role in uniting NRIs, enabling them to celebrate their accomplishments abroad while staying connected to India.

Daljit Singh, also from the USA, lauded initiatives like the removal of GST on Harmandir Sahib and the establishment of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, benefiting the Sikh community.

Several delegates, such as Amma Haider from the UAE, described the emotional significance of PBD. “A mother whose children are scattered all over invites them back home. This event feels like that,” Haider remarked, capturing the spirit of the occasion.

Key Highlights and Events

Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the convention, emphasizing the diaspora’s role in India’s journey toward becoming a developed nation. Among the highlights:

The inaugural journey of the Pravasi Bharatiya Express, a special tourist train for the diaspora, was flagged off virtually. The train will traverse India’s cultural and religious landmarks over three weeks.

A virtual address by Christine Carla Kangaloo, President of Trinidad and Tobago, added an international dimension to the proceedings.

The convention’s valedictory session, presided over by President Droupadi Murmu, will honor 27 distinguished diaspora members with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards 2025. These awards celebrate their remarkable contributions to India and their host countries.

Odisha’s Vision for a Global Future

The PBD Convention also focused on Odisha’s strategic development goals. Delegates visited key sites in Bhubaneswar, Puri, and Jajpur, showcasing Odisha’s tourism potential. Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja emphasized these efforts to promote Odisha on the global stage, aligning with the state’s ambitions for economic and cultural resurgence.

Building a Shared Dream

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2025 reaffirms the enduring bond between India and its diaspora. As delegates share their experiences, aspirations, and gratitude, the event inspires a collective vision for a “Viksit Bharat.” Odisha’s successful hosting of this prestigious convention not only cements its place on the global map but also serves as a reminder of India’s inclusive progress.

Through PBD, the global Indian family comes together, bound by shared heritage and a common dream: a brighter, more prosperous future for India and the world.
