New Delhi: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi delivered a video message today to mark the launch of the Genome India Project, describing it as a “historic step in the field of research.” Highlighting the project’s significance, Shri Modi remarked, “The Genome India Project is an important milestone in the biotechnology revolution.”
The project, approved five years ago, successfully sequenced the genomes of 10,000 Indians, showcasing the diversity of the nation’s genetic landscape. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, over 20 premier institutions, including IISc, IITs, CSIR, and DBT-BRIC, collaborated to complete this monumental task. The resulting data is now accessible at the Indian Biological Data Center, a resource that promises to aid scholars, scientists, and policymakers alike.
Advancing Healthcare and Genetic Research
Shri Modi emphasized the importance of understanding India’s vast genetic diversity to tackle diseases more effectively. He cited the prevalence of sickle cell anemia in tribal communities as an example, stressing the need for region-specific genetic studies to develop tailored treatments. The project, he noted, also aims to raise awareness about genetic diseases, many of which are inherited but remain underrecognized in India.
“By creating a detailed genetic map of India, we can develop precise treatments and solutions for diverse populations,” he said, underscoring the project’s potential to revolutionize healthcare and address genetic disorders across the nation.
Driving the Bio Economy and Global Leadership
The Prime Minister highlighted India’s rapid strides in biotechnology and its growing Bio Economy, which has expanded from $10 billion in 2014 to over $150 billion today. He lauded the launch of the Bio E3 Policy, aimed at leveraging natural resources and promoting bio-based products to position India as a global biotech leader.
“India is committed to driving sustainable development and innovation,” Shri Modi declared, noting the synergy between biotechnology and biomass as key to building a developed and self-reliant India.
Strengthening India’s Pharma and Research Ecosystem
The Genome India Project adds momentum to India’s evolving role as a global pharmaceutical hub. Shri Modi praised the country’s revolutionary strides in public healthcare, including affordable medicines through Jan Aushadhi Kendras and advanced medical infrastructure. He noted how India’s pharma industry demonstrated its resilience during the pandemic and emphasized the need to establish robust supply chains for drug manufacturing.
Additionally, the Prime Minister spotlighted efforts to build a robust research ecosystem, including initiatives like Atal Tinkering Labs, Atal Incubation Centers, and the PM Research Fellowship Scheme. He also announced the creation of a ₹1 lakh crore fund to promote research in sunrise technologies.
“One Nation One Subscription” for Global Knowledge Access
Shri Modi also emphasized the significance of the “One Nation One Subscription” initiative, which provides Indian students and researchers free access to prestigious global journals. He asserted that this effort would cement India’s position as a knowledge and innovation hub.
A Vision for the Future
Concluding his remarks, Shri Modi expressed confidence that the Genome India Project would strengthen India’s image in genetic research and contribute to solving global challenges. “The world is looking to India for solutions, presenting both a responsibility and an opportunity,” he said.
The Prime Minister extended his best wishes to all stakeholders of the Genome India Project, reiterating India’s commitment to pioneering innovation and scientific excellence.
