A Visionary Leader in Economic and Administrative Reforms

Shaktikanta Das, a distinguished bureaucrat and former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has been appointed as Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His vast experience in economic policy, finance, and governance makes him a pivotal figure in India’s administrative framework. Over the years, he has played a critical role in shaping the country’s financial landscape, earning recognition for his leadership and decision-making skills.

An Illustrious Career in Public Service

Das, a 1980-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, holds a master’s degree in history from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and a postgraduate degree in public administration from the University of Birmingham. His career has spanned over 38 years, during which he has held key positions in both the Central and State Governments.

As Secretary of the Department of Revenue and the Department of Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance, Das played a crucial role in policy formulation. His expertise was instrumental in crafting eight Union Budgets, a significant achievement that highlights his deep understanding of fiscal governance.

Leadership in Economic Reforms

Das gained national prominence when he served as Economic Affairs Secretary during India’s demonetization initiative in 2016. He was actively involved in managing the aftermath of the withdrawal of high-denomination currency notes, a move aimed at curbing black money and promoting digital transactions.

His appointment as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India in 2018 came at a time of economic uncertainty. As the 25th Governor of the RBI, Das introduced measures to stabilize the economy, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, where his leadership ensured liquidity, controlled inflation, and guided India’s financial institutions through unprecedented challenges. His tenure was extended in 2021, reflecting the trust reposed in his leadership.

Another landmark contribution was his role in the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2017, which streamlined India’s indirect taxation system and improved ease of doing business.

Contributions to Global Economic Affairs

Beyond domestic economic policies, Das has represented India in the global financial arena. He was a member of the 15th Finance Commission and served as India’s G20 Sherpa, contributing to major international economic discussions. His participation in global economic policymaking has strengthened India’s presence on international platforms.

A New Role in the Prime Minister’s Office

With his appointment as Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Das will work alongside P.K. Mishra, who has held the position since 2019. His tenure will be co-terminus with the Prime Minister’s term or until further orders. His deep knowledge of finance, taxation, and governance is expected to bolster the strategic decision-making process in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

A Legacy of Excellence in Governance

Shaktikanta Das’s career is a testament to his commitment to public service and economic reforms. His leadership in financial policymaking, crisis management, and international economic diplomacy has shaped India’s economic direction. As he steps into his new role, his vast experience and expertise are set to further strengthen India’s administrative and economic strategies, ensuring continued progress and stability for the nation.
