A Global Spotlight on Millets

Millets, once considered a forgotten grain, are making a strong comeback on the global stage, thanks to India’s dedicated efforts to promote them as a nutritious and sustainable food source. Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, during his visit to India for the NXT Conclave 2025, explored the Millets Experience Center in Delhi’s INA Market. There, he tasted millet-based dishes for the first time and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative in promoting these nutrient-rich grains.

Tony Abbott’s Experience with Millets

Expressing his surprise at the variety and taste of millet-based foods, Abbott admitted, “I was not really familiar with millets. In Australia, we eat wheat and rice, but these different dishes were delicious, and above all, obviously, they were very healthy.” His visit highlighted the increasing global interest in millets as an alternative to conventional grains.

During the event, he was introduced to the different types of millets and their nutritional benefits. His appreciation of India’s initiative aligns with the country’s vision to revive millets, not just for health benefits but also for sustainable farming and economic growth.

The Rising Importance of Millets

Millets have been a staple in Indian agriculture for centuries, but their consumption declined with the rise of wheat and rice. However, these grains are now regaining prominence due to their immense health benefits, including:

  • High Nutritional Value: Millets are rich in fiber, protein, and essential micronutrients like iron and calcium.
  • Gluten-Free & Easy to Digest: A great option for people with gluten intolerance or digestive issues.
  • Climate-Resilient Crop: Requires less water and grows in arid conditions, making it a sustainable alternative to water-intensive crops like rice.
  • Supports Farmers & Rural Economy: Encouraging millet farming provides economic security to small-scale farmers.

Millets on the Global Stage: India’s G20 Initiative

India has been at the forefront of bringing millets into global discussions. Recognizing their health and sustainability benefits, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets following India’s proposal.

To further promote millets, India showcased them at the G20 Summit, where world leaders were served a variety of millet-based dishes. This effort was aimed at demonstrating their potential as a global superfood and encouraging their widespread adoption.

Millets Experience Center: Reviving a Forgotten Tradition

The Millets Experience Center, run by the company Millet for Health with support from the Government of India, Ministry of Agriculture, and NAFED, is an initiative aimed at bringing millets back into everyday diets. Pallavi Upadhyay, Co-founder and Managing Director of Millet for Health, stated, “People should understand that we can cook a variety of delicious meals with Shri Ann (Millets). This grain is part of our civilization, but we have forgotten it.”

In addition to food, millet-based products for home construction and other uses are also being introduced, further expanding their reach beyond just nutrition.

A Future Built on Millets

With global leaders recognizing their value, millets are poised to become a major part of sustainable food systems worldwide. Former Australian PM Tony Abbott’s experience is a testament to India’s success in reviving this ancient grain. As millets gain international recognition, they hold the potential to transform not just food habits but also agricultural practices and rural economies, ensuring a healthier and more sustainable future for all.
