Govt. committed towards development of persons with disability

In a move towards providing opportunities for capacity development of persons with disability, fulfilling their rights, facilitating and promoting an enabling environment and an inclusive society, a National Trust under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India has been set up. The Trust is a statutory body for the welfare of persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities and has been formed as an initiative for online processing of all its schemes and activities as a part of the “Digital India” campaign.

To support the Ministry,ALIMCO (a Miniratna category – II CPSU under the aegis of DEPwD, Ministry of Social Justice& Empowerment, Govt. of India) works tirelessly towards achieving the objective. In a recent development, Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), which manufactures artificial organs inaugurated a manufacturing unit in Ujjain in April in the presence of the Union minister for social justice, Thawarchand Gehlot. The inauguration was marked by an employment fair for differently abled people, in which over 40 organisations held a campus drive for selecting disabled persons.

Gehlot inspected the under construction unit of the unit and instructed officials concerned about the construction of a Tricycle plant shed and observed the Tripod and sticks manufacturing units. MLA Satish Malviya, speaker Sonu Gehlot, BJP district head Iqbal Singh Gandhi and Sachin Saxena were also present.

 

MoU signed between DEPwD and ALIMCO for the financial year 2018-19

The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD-Divyangjan Shashaktikaran Vibhag), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ALIMCO for the Financial Year 2018-19. It covers major developments to be achieved in this year for the Empowerment of Divyangjans of the country. The MoU was signed by Smt Shakuntala D. Gamlin, Secretary DEPwD & Shri D.R.Sarin, CMD – ALIMCO. On this occasion, Dr. Prabodh Seth, Joint Secretary, DEPwD andSmt Dolly Chakraborty, Joint Secretary, DEPwD were also present.

For the past 40 years, ALIMCO has been relentlessly manufacturing various types of aids and appliances on a mass scale to meet the requirements of PwDs including orthopaedics, visual and hearing impaired etc. Since its inception, it has been serving on an average around two lakhs of disabled population every year and has supplied 42 lakhs of aids & appliances (approx.).

The Government’s commitment towards the welfare of students from SCs, OBCs, EBCs, DNTs and Divyangjans has also been commendable. The objective of these scholarships are to facilitate educational empowerment of students from these classes and ensure their economic and social empowerment. There is also a substantial increase in the financial allocations and change in the eligibility criteria for these scholarships.

Recently the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar welcomed the victorious Indian Wheelchair Cricket team, and saidthat the Government is committed to the empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. The Wheelchair Cricket Championshipisa first of its kind tournament that not only inculcates a positive attitude among Persons with Disabilities but also provides a platform to showcase their talent and physical abilities. The Indian Wheelchair Cricket team beat Bangladesh in three-matches of the Wheelchair Cricket Series 2018 by 2-0 held at the University of Dhaka stadium, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Gehlot tweeted – “The Indian Wheelchair Cricket Warriors outshine Bangladesh in the 2nd International T-20 Wheelchair Cricket Match Series in Dhaka. My best wishes to team India and the organizers Wheelchair Cricket India Association on this wonderful victory.”
