Agra Metro first in India to use arch girders | All you need to know

For the first time in India, arch girders are being used to build the byeduct on the Basai-Fatehabad Road stretch of the Agra Metro.

If all goes as planned, the Agra Metro Rail will be flagged off before the 2024 general elections. Moreover, it is the first metro transit system where arch girders are being used, a senior UPMRC officer told India Today.

Arch girders are pre-cast and placed on the pillars of the elevated sections with the help of a hydraulic crane. It is used for track crossover. The usage of arch girders ensures that time is saved and traffic is not disrupted.

UPMRC chief Kumar Keshav told India Today that this is a completely new technique being used for the first time in India.

According to UPMRC sources, three metro stations — Taj East, Basai, and Fatehabad Road will be built on the Agra-Fatehabad Road at the cost of Rs 273 crores. The laying of byeducts between Taj East and Basai is complete, while arch girders are being used to build the byeduct on the Basai-Fatehabad Road stretch.

Agra Metro Project Director Arvind Rai said the three stations will be completed by December 2022. Finishing work on the first metro station has already begun, while a 2 km elevated corridor has also been prepared.

The construction of the Metro Depot at the PAC grounds is also in its final stages. The laying of tracks has begun. Among the seven underground metro stations, work on the Agra Fort Metro station has also started.

Rai said that there are 13 stations on the 14 km long track between Sikandra and Tajmahal East Gate and so far, four stations are in different stages of completion
