Amid Border Row with China, BRO To Build World’s Highest Airfield for Fighter Jets In Ladakh’s Nyoma

  • The Border Roads Organization (BRO) will construct the world’s highest fighter airfield in the Nyoma region of Ladakh. 
  • According to the BRO official, the airfield will help boost the air infrastructure and will be used for a wide-ranging strategic air asset. 
  • The defence minister will inaugurate and dedicate to the nation 90 infrastructure projects constructed by the Border Roads Organization at a cost of Rs 2,941 crore. 
  • BRO chief said that India will beat China in the next two to three years as the government is proactively working towards developing infrastructure along the 3,488 Km stretch of the Line of Actual Control. 

The Border Roads Organization(BRO) will construct the world’s highest fighter airfield in the Nyoma region of Ladakh, an official statement said. BRO said that the foundation stone of the project will be laid by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh from Devak Bridge on September 12.

The Nyoma Advanced Landing Ground has been used for the transportation of army personnel and military equipment.

According to the BRO official, the airfield will help boost the air infrastructure and will be used for a wide-ranging strategic air asset. “The construction of this airfield will tremendously boost the air infrastructure in Ladakh and augment the IAF’s (Indian Air Force) capability along our northern borders,” PTI quoted the BRO official as saying.

According to the report, apart from laying the foundation stone for this airfield, the defence minister will also inaugurate and dedicate to the nation 90 infrastructure projects constructed by the Border Roads Organization at a cost of Rs 2,941 crore. Rajnath Singh will also inaugurate the reconstructed Bagdogra and Barrackpore airfields in West Bengal on September 12, the PRO said, adding, that the airfields have been revamped by the BRO at a cost of Rs 529 crore.

These airfields will not only improve the defensive and offensive architecture of the Indian Air Force along the northern borders but also facilitate commercial flight operations in the region. It is to be noted that the Nyoma Advanced Landing Ground has been used for the transportation of army personnel and military equipment amid the stand-off with China since 2020, and witnessed operations of Chinook heavy-lift helicopters and the C-130J special operations aircraft, a news agency reported.

Earlier, BRO chief Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry said that India will beat China in the next two to three years as the Narendra Modi-led NDA government is proactively working towards developing infrastructure along the 3,488 Km stretch of the Line of Actual Control. He said 295 projects have been completed worth ₹ 11,000 crore in the last 2-3 years.

Highlighting the budget earmarked for the development of infrastructure along the LAC by the central government in recent years, Mr Chaudhry said, “In 2008, our budget used to be approximately ₹ 3,000 crore. In 2017 it increased to ₹ 5,000-6,000 crore. In 2019, it went up to ₹ 8,000 crore and increased thereafter. And in the last year around ₹ 12,340 crore were spent.”
