Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that ‘Make in India’ should be termed as a “farce”, while questioning its credibility.

Pointing out that the trade deficit between India and China is 69 million dollars, Adhir said it means New Delhi is importing more from Beijing rather than exporting.

“If ‘Make in India’ is successful, why are we relying on China,” he asked.

On Friday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also targeted the Modi government over the issue of jobs, charging that ‘Make in India’ is turning into ‘Buy from China’. Alleging that the imports from China are at an all-time high under the Modi government, Rahul said that it has “destroyed” the medium and small industries and unorganised sector that creates jobs.

“JUMLA for India, JOBS for China! The Modi Government has destroyed the Unorganised Sector and MSMEs that create the most jobs. Result: ‘Make In India’ is now ‘Buy from China’,” he said on Twitter.

The former Congress chief also shared a 1:30-minute video where it is alleged that the Modi government promised ‘Make in India’, yet it only “buys from China” and that there has been a record 46 per cent increase in imports from China in 2021, which is the highest ever. He also shared excerpts of his speech in Parliament on the issue in the video, where he attacked the government on China policy.

Gandhi and his Congress party have been critical of the government’s response and handling of the border dispute with China and have been demanding strong action on the matter. In his address in the Parliament, the Wayanad MP had accused the BJP government of bringing Pakistan and China closer.

“The single biggest strategic goal of India has been to keep China and Pakistan apart. But what you have done is brought them together. You have committed the single biggest crime you can commit against the people of India. China has a plan,” he had said.
