Covid just excuse: Rahul Gandhi on Centre’s ‘stop Bharat Jodo Yatra’

The remarks come a day after the Union health ministry wrote to the Congress scion, asking him to suspend the yatra if following Covid protocols is not possible.

The BJP is scared of India’s truth and is using Covid as an excuse to stop the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi said today, a day after the Union health ministry wrote to the Congress scion, asking him to suspend the yatra if following Covid protocols is not possible

“It’s their (the BJP’s) new idea. They wrote a letter to me saying Covid is coming and stop the Yatra. All these are excuses to stop this Yatra. They are scared of India’s truth,” Rahul Gandhi said.

All these are just excuses to stop the yatra. Everything is an excuse. These people (the BJP) are scared and that’s the truth. They want to stop us. Everyone is scared of India’s might. We have been walking for over a hundred days now. Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, women, men, and children have all joined us. The yatra will go to Jammu and Kashmir,” Gandhi said.

On Wednesday, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya wrote to Rahul Gandhi and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, saying that Covid guidelines should be strictly followed during the Bharat Jodo Yatra and masks and sanitisers must be used.

The minister, taking note of the public health emergency, also said that if following Covid protocols is not possible, the yatra should be postponed in the national interest.

“Only vaccinated people should participate in the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Follow covid rules or suspend yatra,” the letter said.

The Congress responded to the note and accused the Centre of selectively picking on the Bharat Jodo Yatra because of its success. The grand old party today asked if the health minister sent letters to the organisers of BJP’s rallies in Rajasthan and Karnataka.
