The Congress party has unveiled its latest promise for the upcoming Delhi Assembly Elections 2025, pledging Rs 25 lakh health insurance coverage for all residents under its newly announced ‘Jeevan Raksha Yojana’. The scheme is set to be a cornerstone of the party’s campaign as it aims to make a strong comeback in the national capital.

Second Major Promise by Congress

This is the second key guarantee announced by the Congress for Delhi voters. Earlier, on January 6, the party introduced the Pyaari Didi Yojana’, a scheme promising Rs 2,500 monthly assistance to women in Delhi. Congress leaders have assured that both schemes will be implemented prominently if the party is voted to power.

Details of ‘Jeevan Raksha Yojana’

Announcing the scheme, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot drew parallels with the successful Chiranjeevi Yojana in Rajasthan.

  • Under the scheme, all residents will receive health insurance coverage of up to Rs 25 lakh.
  • The initiative aims to provide universal access to healthcare services without conditions or restrictions.
  • Gehlot emphasized its transformative potential, calling it a “game-changer scheme for Delhi” and urging party workers to spread awareness among voters.

Gehlot added, “This initiative will ensure inclusivity and bring a revolutionary change, just as the ‘Right to Health Act’ did in Rajasthan.”

Congress Campaign Strategy

At the event, Congress election in-charge Devendra Yadav acknowledged past missteps, including the alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) during the Lok Sabha elections. Yadav stated, “We admit that the agreement with AAP was a big mistake, and we will not repeat it. Delhi’s residents are turning to Congress as they seek a change.”

The party’s campaign slogan, “Hogi Har Zarurat Puri, Congress Hai Zaroori”, prominently highlighted Congress’ commitment to ensuring essential services for all.

Delhi Assembly Election 2025 Timeline

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has scheduled the Delhi Assembly polls for February 5, with results to be announced on February 8.

  • Gazette notification issuance: January 10
  • Last date for filing nominations: January 17
  • Scrutiny of nominations: January 18
  • Last date for withdrawal: January 20

Challenges and Past Performance

In the 2020 Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) dominated with 62 of the 70 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 8. The Congress failed to win any seats.

  • Voter turnout in 2020 was 62.82%, a decline from 67.47% in 2015.
  • AAP secured 53.57% of the total votes, compared to BJP’s 38.51%.

Looking Ahead

With health and welfare at the forefront of its campaign, the Congress is positioning itself as a serious contender in Delhi’s political landscape. Whether the promises under ‘Jeevan Raksha Yojana’ and ‘Pyaari Didi Yojana’ will resonate with voters and counter AAP’s dominance remains to be seen.
