The Delhi Election Commission is set to release the final voter list today, marking a significant step ahead of the highly anticipated 2025 Assembly elections. This updated list will determine voter eligibility, with any omissions barring individuals from participating in the electoral process.
Allegations of Voter Deletion
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has raised serious allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of filing bulk applications to remove names of voters perceived to support the Kejriwal-led government. AAP leaders claim that these actions are aimed at undermining their voter base.
Earlier, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh alleged irregularities in voter name deletions in the New Delhi constituency, where party convener Arvind Kejriwal is expected to contest. However, the district election officer (DEO) of New Delhi dismissed these claims as “factually incorrect and baseless,” emphasizing that all deletions are carried out following strict guidelines from the Election Commission of India (ECI).
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the DEO clarified that any application for deletion undergoes thorough verification, and summaries of Form 7 (including names of objectors and objectees) are shared weekly with all recognized political parties, including AAP.
Political Tensions Escalate
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi is set to address the media at 2 PM today, with expectations of significant revelations about a potential scam. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a public address, assured Delhi residents that welfare schemes would continue uninterrupted under a BJP-led government. He criticized AAP using terms like “aapda” (disaster) and “Sheesh Mahal” (glass palace), further intensifying the political discourse.
Delhi Assembly Elections 2025
The Delhi Assembly elections are expected to take place in February 2025, though official dates are yet to be announced by the Election Commission. The AAP, which secured a landslide victory in the 2020 elections with 62 out of 70 seats, faces challenges from the BJP, which won eight seats in the last elections. The Congress, which once dominated Delhi for 15 years, has been unable to secure a single seat in the last two elections.
The release of the final voter list is poised to set the stage for an intense electoral battle as political parties gear up for a decisive contest in the national capital.
