The Cyber Cell Crime Branch of Delhi has arrested a software engineer for cheating hundreds of people by selling fake online tickets for the Taj Mahal.
The accused, identified as Sandeep Chand, is a resident of Dehradun, Uttarakhand and was working in a software company in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, as a senior software engineer.
Police started investigating the matter after a complaint was received from Director General, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Ministry of Culture, about people being cheated while booking tickets for historical monuments online.
The matter came to the fore after one of the tourists made a booking online through a website, www.agramonuments.in, but the ticket could not be generated and the amount was deducted from the bank account.
During the investigation, technical details of the registrant and user of the alleged website were collected, based on which technical surveillance was mounted. The accused frequently changed his location. However, on perseverance, Sandeep Chand was apprehended from Champawat, Uttarakhand.
The accused disclosed that due to lockdown, his job was not going well. Hence, while surfing the internet, he got the idea of creating a fake website. He created a fake domain, www.agramonuments.in, to cheat people on the pretext of the sale/ booking of online tickets for visiting the Taj Mahal and earn easy money.
The police team recovered a mobile phone and a laptop which was used by him to create the fake website. Further investigations are on.
