New Delhi: A dense layer of fog enveloped Delhi on Saturday (January 4), reducing visibility to zero in several areas and causing massive disruptions in transportation. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for fog, predicting similar conditions in the coming days.

Flight Operations Severely Affected

At Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, flight operations were severely impacted. According to Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), 33 flights were cancelled, and over 150 flights were delayed. Indigo Airlines temporarily halted all departures and arrivals due to the dense fog.

“Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted,” DIAL said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Although all runways were operational under CAT-III conditions, which allow aircraft to land and take off in low visibility, the thick fog created airside congestion, delaying operations further. The IMD reported visibility at the airport plummeted to 0 metres early Saturday morning.

Train Services Disrupted

Train operations were also disrupted, with 49 trains departing from and arriving in Delhi running late. Most were delayed by 3-4 hours, and 10 trains had their schedules rescheduled due to the weather.

Weather and Air Quality Updates

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 10.2°C on Saturday morning, slightly higher than the 9.6°C recorded the previous day. The maximum temperature is expected to settle at 21°C. Moderate fog and smog are predicted to persist, with dense fog in isolated areas during the early hours.

The air quality in the national capital remained in the ‘very poor’ category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 385 recorded at 6 am. The AQI was 348 at the same time the previous day.

Impact on Daily Life

As the harsh winter conditions continued, many homeless individuals sought refuge in night shelters. Authorities have ramped up efforts to provide food and warmth to those affected by the cold wave.

Looking Ahead

Wind speeds are expected to increase slightly to 4-6 kmph in the afternoon, offering some relief, but will decrease again by evening. The IMD has urged citizens to take precautions and stay updated on weather conditions to minimize inconvenience.
