In a dramatic statement, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has warned that “all hell will break out” in the Middle East if Hamas fails to release hostages held in Gaza before his inauguration on January 20. Speaking at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “It will not be good for Hamas and it will not be good, frankly, for anyone.”
The comments come amid ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, with Steve Witkoff, Trump’s nominee for Special Envoy to the Middle East, expressing optimism about progress in securing the hostages’ release. Witkoff credited Trump’s reputation and leadership for driving the negotiations forward, stating, “Hopefully, it’ll all work out and we’ll save some lives.”
Biden Administration’s Role
The Biden administration has been leading efforts to broker a ceasefire and secure the hostages’ release. Despite some successes, including the release of dozens of hostages in an earlier agreement, progress has stalled. A senior Biden administration official described the negotiations as “challenging,” while emphasizing ongoing collaboration with Trump’s incoming national security team.
Trump’s Controversial Statements
During the press conference, Trump also made bold remarks about potentially using “military or economic force” to acquire Greenland and regain control of the Panama Canal, citing economic security concerns. He warned Denmark of high tariffs if it refused to relinquish control of Greenland, suggesting that its people could vote for independence or join the United States.
As January 20 approaches, the situation remains tense, with Trump’s strong rhetoric signaling potential shifts in U.S. foreign policy under his administration.
