- A scientist working in the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Pune has been arrested by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on spying charges.
- The DRDO scientist was allegedly in touch with an agent of a “Pakistan Intelligence Operative” through WhatsApp and video calls.
- Officials said that despite holding a responsible position, the DRDO official has misused his post by providing confidential information to a Pakistani agent.
- It was a case of honeytrap, the official added.
- The ATS police station at Kalachowki Mumbai, has filed a case under Section 1923 of the Official Secrets Act 1923 and other relevant sections.
A scientist working in one of the facilities of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Pune has been arrested by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on spying charges. The DRDO scientist was allegedly in touch with an agent of a “Pakistan Intelligence Operative” through WhatsApp and video calls.
The ATS officials said that the accused scientist was in touch with the PIO through social media via WhatsApp Messages’, voice calls, video, etc. Officials said that despite holding a responsible position, the DRDO official has misused his post by providing confidential information to a Pakistani agent thereby compromising sensitive government secrets, which could pose a threat to India’s security if it falls into the hands of the enemy nation. It was a case of honeytrap, he added.
“The scientist, by misusing his position, despite knowing that the official secrets in his possession if obtained by the enemy country can pose a threat to the security of the country, provided the details to the enemy country,” an ATS release said.
The ATS police station at Kalachowki Mumbai has filed a case under Section 1923 of the Official Secrets Act 1923 and other relevant sections. Officials said that further probe is being done by investigating officer for the case who is of Senior Police Inspector rank from Anti-Terrorism Squad, Pune Unit.
