Foxconn is considering spending $1 billion to establish a smartphone display module assembly plant in Tamil Nadu. This facility would mark Foxconn’s first display module unit in India and is intended to support Apple’s iPhone production efforts in the country.

This investment aligns with the ongoing trend of major tech companies increasing their manufacturing capabilities in India to diversify supply chains and enhance local production. This will be Foxconn’s first display module plant constructed in India, and it will help with Apple’s iPhone manufacturing.

Components from this plant may also be used by other manufacturers, such as Tata Electronics or Pegatron. Foxconn secured 500,000 square feet at an industrial park in Oragadam, near Chennai, which is next to its existing smartphone assembly plant.

Foxconn has secured a 500,000-square-foot space at an industrial park in Oragadam, near Chennai, adjacent to its existing smartphone assembly plant. This new facility will focus on assembling smartphone display modules, marking a significant step in India’s electronics manufacturing landscape. Industry experts believe this initiative could help India enhance its position in the global electronics value chain.

According to Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint, local assembly of displays could add an additional 2-3% value to the production process, complementing the existing 5% value added through phone assembly. The establishment of this display unit may also support Foxconn’s plans to assemble Google Pixel phones in India.

As Foxconn rapidly expands its smartphone operations in India, it is also looking to diversify into sectors like electric vehicles, batteries, and semiconductors. Currently, India relies heavily on imports for display modules, primarily from China and South Korea.

By setting up local assembly units, Foxconn aims to reduce supply chain delays and costs, ultimately benefiting brands by shortening delivery times. Major global players in the display module market include Samsung Display, BOE Technology, and LG Display, while local assembly is largely dominated by Chinese firms such as TCL CSOT and TXD (India) Technology.
