The French government has set an ambitious target of welcoming 30,000 Indian students to its universities by 2030. This initiative is part of the broader goal to strengthen educational and diplomatic ties between India and France. To facilitate this, the French Embassy in India and Campus France have launched the second edition of Classes Internationales, a programme designed to prepare Indian students for higher education in France. The initiative was first announced by French President Emmanuel Macron during his visit to Jaipur in January 2024.

Classes Internationales and Indo-French Relations

Classes Internationales serves as a preparatory programme, offering Indian students a foundational year of French language training and academic readiness. This enables both beginners and advanced learners to transition into French-taught undergraduate programmes. The initiative aligns with the French government’s vision of enhancing educational exchanges, a key component of the strong diplomatic relationship between India and France.

The two nations share a long history of cooperation in various fields, including defense, trade, and technology. Over the years, educational collaboration has emerged as a crucial aspect of their partnership, with numerous student exchange programmes and research collaborations taking place between Indian and French institutions.

Key Features of Classes Internationales

  • More than 30 institutions in France are offering courses in diverse fields such as arts, engineering, social sciences, and design.
  • Upon completion, students gain access to over 200 academic programmes in France.
  • Some courses follow an apprenticeship model, allowing students to combine studies with work experience. Many companies also sponsor tuition fees and provide financial assistance.
  • The programme ensures affordability through partnerships with French public universities, allowing Indian students to study at reasonable costs.
  • The initiative promotes cultural exchange, enriching students with international exposure and global career opportunities.

Application Process and Deadlines

The application deadlines for Classes Internationales are as follows:

  • March 31, 2025: For students with no prior knowledge of the French language.
  • May 15, 2025: For students with A2-level proficiency or higher.
  • Students can apply directly through the official website: www.classesinternationales.org. Admissions are based on academic background and motivation, and no entrance exam is required.

With the launch of the Classes Internationales programme, France is taking significant steps to attract Indian students and deepen educational ties with India. By providing a structured pathway to French higher education, the initiative fosters cross-cultural collaboration and strengthens the long-standing friendship between the two nations. As the programme gains momentum, it is expected to open new doors for Indian students seeking global academic and professional opportunities.
