In a significant development for both the United Nations and Indonesia, Gita Sabharwal of India has been appointed as the UN resident coordinator in Indonesia by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. With nearly three decades of diverse experience in development initiatives spanning climate resilience, sustainable peace, governance, and social policy, Sabharwal brings a wealth of expertise to her new role. Her appointment underscores the UN’s commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through innovative approaches and strategic partnerships.
Stepping into her new post in Jakarta, Sabharwal is poised to lead efforts aimed at accelerating progress towards the SDGs in one of the region’s largest economies. Expressing her honor and enthusiasm, Sabharwal emphasizes her dedication to serving the Indonesian government and people alongside 26 UN agencies. Her previous roles, including serving as the UN resident coordinator in Thailand and as a peacebuilding and development adviser in Sri Lanka, have equipped her with invaluable insights and diplomatic skills essential for fostering collaborative endeavors between the UN and Indonesia.
Before joining the UN, Sabharwal held prominent positions, including deputy country representative for The Asia Foundation in the Maldives and Sri Lanka, and poverty and policy adviser for the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development in India and Vietnam. Her academic background includes a master’s degree in development management from the University of Wales, UK.
As the highest-ranking representative of the UN Development System in Indonesia, Sabharwal shoulders the responsibility of leading the UN country team and coordinating support for the nation’s pursuit of the 2030 Agenda. This involves engaging with governmental bodies, civil society organizations, and diverse stakeholders to address Indonesia’s developmental challenges in alignment with the SDGs.
