Surveys from the Geological Survey of India (GSI) have found gold deposits in three districts of Odisha. State Steel and Mines Minister Prafulla Mallik said that the gold reserves were found in Deogarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.

Odisha is endowed with vast resources of a variety of minerals and occupies a prominent place in the country as a mineral rich State. Abundant reserves of high-grade Iron ore, Bauxite, Chromite, Manganese ore along with other minerals such as Coal, Limestone, Dolomite, Tin, Nickel, Vanadium, Lead, Graphite, Gold, Gemstone, Diamond, Dimension & Decorative Stone etc. are extensively available in the State. This has opened up immense possibilities for locating mineral based industries for manufacture of Steel, Ferro-alloys, Cement, Alumina/ Aluminum, Refractories, Thermal Power etc., along with setting up other auxiliary and ancillary downstream industries.

The Steel & Mines Department is one of the important Departments of Government of Odisha. It works for the development of the mineral resources of the State under the regulatory powers. It also encourages and provides support for value addition and end-use of minerals in the State.

Gold deposits of Orissa can be broadly divided into three broad zones of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sundargarh districts. In Keonjhar district gold occurrences have been reported from Saleikana-Dimirimunda-Kardangi sector in Telkoi block and Gopapur, Gajipur, Adal, Kushkala sector in Banspal block. Out of these localities Gopapur area seems to be the most promising one. The Precambrian metavolcanics of Gopapur in the Keonjhar district host auriferous quartz vein. In this area detailed exploration is carried out by GSI.

Responding to a written question asked by MLA from Dhenkanal, Sudhir Kumar Samal, the Minister stated “The surveys of the Directorate of Mines and Geological Survey of India (GSI) revelation the presence of Gold reserves in three districts including Deogarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.”
