Congress leader Kumari Selja has pledged to conduct a caste census in Haryana if her party wins the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled for October 1. In her statement, the Congress general secretary and Sirsa MP emphasized the widespread support for a caste-based census, claiming that 74% of the population endorses the idea.
Selja accused the BJP of being anti-Dalit and anti-reservation, stating that the ruling party should abandon any attempts to block the caste census. She asserted that once Congress forms the government in Haryana, the census would be a priority.
This promise aligns with the broader stance of Congress, as highlighted by Rahul Gandhi’s recent demand for a nationwide caste census. Gandhi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to initiate the process, warning that if he did not, the next Prime Minister would.
The Congress party views the caste census as essential for policy-making, with Rahul Gandhi referring to it as the foundation for ensuring that 90% of the country’s population is not left out of the system.
