  • ‘Hum Tum’ has turned 20 today, on May 28
  • On the special day, director Kunal Kohli shared that the team wanted to buy ‘When Harry…’s rights
  • ‘Hum Tum’ was said to be inspired by the American film

Hum Tum, which changed the rom-com game significantly in Bollywood, has always been touted as a Hindi remake of the American classic, When Harry Met Sally. However, such was Hum Tum’s Indianness that the Harry Met Sally team even refused to consider it as an adaption. This was revealed to IndiaToday.in by the film’s director, Kunal Kohli, in a recent conversation as the movie turned 20.

“Of course, Hum Tum was inspired. But it was inspired more by Annie Hall, directed by Woody Allen (than by When Harry Met Sally). In fact, we had approached the studio to officially buy the rights of When Harry Met Sally, and we had sent them the script of Hum Tum. They got back to us and said that it is not even an adaptation,” Kohli told IndiaToday.in.

During the chat, Kohli went on to add that the movie stands the test of time even after two decades of filming: “It is a light-hearted film, but things said lightly don’t necessarily lack depth. Hum Tum has stood the test of time,” stated Kunal Kohli.

Hum Tum drastically altered the career of lead star Khan, who not only won commercial and critical acclaim for his act, but a National Award too.

The romantic-comedy starred Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji in the lead roles. Apart from the duo, the movie also featured the late Rishi Kapoor, Kirron Kher, Rati Agnihotri and Abhishek Bachchan among others in pivotal roles.
