Antigua, June 21, 2024 – In a thrilling encounter at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, South Africa emerged victorious over the USA by 18 runs in their Super 8 (Group 2) match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 last night.
South Africa set a challenging target of 195 runs after being put to bat first by the USA, who won the toss and opted to bowl. South Africa’s innings was anchored by a stellar performance from Quinton de Kock, who scored an impressive 74 runs. Aiden Markram also contributed significantly with a solid 46 runs. The Proteas finished their innings at 194 for four wickets in the allotted 20 overs. The USA bowlers, left-arm pacer Saurabh Netravalkar and spinner Harmeet Singh, each managed to take two wickets, curbing South Africa’s scoring to some extent.
In response, the USA put up a spirited fight but fell short, ending their innings at 176 for six wickets in 20 overs. Andries Gous was the top scorer for the USA with an unbeaten 80 runs, showcasing remarkable resilience. Harmeet Singh also made a valuable contribution with 38 runs. South Africa’s bowling attack was led by Kagiso Rabada, who took three crucial wickets, while Keshav Maharaj, Anrich Nortje, and Tabraiz Shamsi chipped in with one wicket each.
Quinton de Kock’s exceptional performance with the bat earned him the Player of the Match award. His innings laid the foundation for South Africa’s total, which proved too steep for the USA to chase down despite a commendable effort.
